Mickey Rooney: A Shining Star

By-Monica Hudzinski

I was first introduced to Mickey Rooney at the tender age of five. My dad is a film collector and I have had the honor and privelge of growing up with a theater in the comfort and convience of my own home. My dad introduced me to alot of movies and alot of stars from the 30's and 40's. I have to say my most favorite of all is  Mickey Rooney. The man is a genius, he can wow the audience with his impressions of Lionel Barrymore and Clark Gable, and  he can cry on the drop of a dime when the mood gets serious. His acting ability and musical talents are irreplaceable! The man was and still is full of energy! I think Mickey Rooney represents innocence and wholesome America entertainment. There is no one out there now a days that could possibly compare to him. I am only 22 years old and yet when I need a good laugh or a mood pick me upper I go and watch a Mickey movie. Mickey is a legend that will forever and always be in the hearts of people all around the world, his talents and his abilitites have touched so many lives, and he has brought so much joy to so many people. This is why I love Mickey Rooney and admire this great shining star among us!

Hi,
I am a big fan of Mickey's. Almost all of Mickey's movies are my fave but my very favorite is the Andy Hardy ones. I think that he gave a wonderful performance in these movies. They say comedy is much harder then drama. The movies told us it is ok to make mistakes and that the heart in the end usually wins out. Everytime I see a Mickey movie I have a smile on my face. I love when Mickey sings and dances. He was and is a wonderful entertainer. I became a fan when I was seven, 32 years ago and will remain one until I die.

take care,
Jo

„Lord, what fools these mortals be!“ called Puck in Warner Brothers adaption of Shakespeare's “A Midsummer Night's Dream” released in 1935. I love Puck's comments about life & love and his playful way. And there is only ONE Puck in this world, it's Mickey! Mr. Mickey Rooney! And I love his epilogue in this movie, too! When I watched “A Midsummer Night's Dream” I became a Mickey fan. Some month later I had the chance to watch “Little Lord Fauntleroy”, “Boys Town”, “Young Tom Edison” etc. Unfortunately there were not too many of the early Mickey films on German TV but more than 35 of the Mickey McGuire 2 reelers. I am a Mickey fan since my childhood. I'm a German and have a very beautiful Vietnamese bride called Thu Ha. Hope she will get a Mickey fan, too!
I prefer the early Mickey films of the 1920s, -30s and -40s. I love the flair of these old movies. I have nearly all of them on tape or DVD. Of course, I like “The Healer” or “Hide Out” as well as the Rooney/Garland musicals. Some of the Andy Hardy films are also great (“Out West with the Hardys” for example).  Mickey was also cute in the Mickey McGuire series! I like his kid gang much more than "Our Gang". Of course, time's changing and movies and people, too. I like Mickey's personality (“little man, big genius!”), his energy and positve attitude,. (I know he had also a depressing time and bad luck in love!) But finally he solved all the problems and found the right one (Jan) and “The man shall have his mare again and all shall be well!” as Puck said . The story of his life gives me also hope to get the right girl!

Of course, I also like some of his newer and recent movies as well as the Black Stallion TV show. I wished I had the chance to speak with him for some hours and hear about his childhood in Hollywood of the 1930s. In any case, times changed but Mickey is always Mickey! And Mickey is always great! Mickey forever!!! Thanks for all the pleasure!!!Long live Mickey!

From Mickey Rooney Fan Kim Gow-

Hi there:

I became a Mickey Rooney fan probably 30 years ago when, as a child, I watched Sunday morning movie matinees on PBS.

My all time favorite, of course, is the Andy Hardy series.  I also love the Mickey and Judy Garland musicals.

I am a huge classic movie musical fan and have an extensive collection.

When I need a little pick me up, or am just in the mood for  light hearted fun, Mickey Rooney always does the trick.

My children are now becoming acquainted with these wonderful movies and enjoy them very much.

There has never been or ever will be an actor of Mr. Rooney's character or ability.

I am truly grateful to be able to have these movies in my collection.

Thanks,

Kim

Our Hero by Terry Van Dyck

Of course, like all of you, I have been a fan all my life.  I'll never forget how Mickey stole my heart in "Boys Town" but I want to tell you about some recent discoveries.  There are always Twilight Zone marathons on holidays and recently, an episode was shown where Mickey played a jockey who was down on his luck.  We wished to be "big man" and wished for that one ride to get his career going again.  He finally got that "ride" and his wish for becoming a big man came true and he was too large to be a jockey any more.  Anyway, as usual, Mickey broke my heart and made me believe he was the character.

Last night I was watching TCM and a the movie "The Strip" came on.  I quickly grabbed a video so I could tape it. Mickey played a drummer (he sings too) who came to LA to play along the Sunset Strip but not before becoming involved with a mobster.  What a great movie.  He plays along side greats such as Louis Armstrong and William Demarest.  It was like a classic film noir, but also had a

background musical going on.  What a movie.  What a character and what an actor, singer, dancer, drummer and who knows what else.

Mr. Rooney, I love you and am so glad you are still around.  I see you on interviews about other actors and actresses and I'm always glad to see you.  You are truly a great entertainer and a great American.  God bless you.

Tribute To Mickey by Larry Gevirtz

 Hi,

Thanks for providing the opportunity for Mickey Rooney fans to pay tribute to a masterful performer.

Mickey Rooney is not only a multi-talented and prodigious actor, but also an invaluable link to Hollywood's golden years and even silent era.  His career now spans an incredible 80+ years, certainly a record for American movie stars.  And he certainly was a golden star--someone who could dazzle with his audacious personality, musical talents, comedic skills and on-target mimickry, but who could also amaze through poignant and touching portrayals.  In short, he did it all, and he's still doing it!  May he continue entertaining his public for years, and may all the awards and tributes he richly deserves keep coming his way.

You're about to see my real hero, the one I've loved all of my life and whom I jokingly tell my friends that I'm saving myself for.. the true one and only, Mickey Rooney.

They bought his youth, his time, his talents, but they never bought the man. Mr. Rooney has always fought on both personal and public levels when he can get the avenues, for everything that he believes in strongly, like our country remaining great and not sinking into the pits, on every sort of front. If any kid ever needed a star to look up to and try to live his/her life as good as, it would be Mr. Rooney. Personally, I don't think there is a single star of the old Hollywood that comes close, and darned few in modern times.

He's also made his film characters something the whole family can enjoy.

My one and only brush with Mr. Rooney came in the early '80's, when I found I could only get a 2nd row seat at "Sugar Babies" in Houston if I went there alone, cause it was already nearly sold out. Mid-way into the show, he appeared as a handy-man, hammering a nail into the wall, not 15 feet from me. I said, just loud enough for him to hear me, yet all the people around me looked at me like I was nuts, "I love you Mickey." He turned, smiled, and waved to me for a second. I thought I would lose my breath.

I'll love this man until the day I die and longer if it's possible. If I can get one other person to take a look at him with this web page, then I'll be a mighty happy camper.

My Reflections On Why I Love Mickey Rooney

My first memories of Mickey Rooney was as a young girl my grandmother talked about Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland movies. I am now 51 years old.  Mickey and Judy were the perfect screen pair. My grandmother liked all of Mickey and Judy's movies, but the ones I remember sharing with my grandmother was the Andy Hardy series. Since T.V. came into existence during my childhood, I would always check the TV Guide for air dates for the Andy Hardy movies as well as other movies of Mickey's. Then cable brought about American Movie Classics and Turner Classic Movies by this time I was an adult with two children of my own. I had a greater appreciation for what my grandmother had taught me over the years, and why it was so important to her that I have good wholesome entertainment in my childhood. I was saddened when the movie industry changed in the mid sixties to include sex, profanity, and violence. I did not enjoy going to the movies as much. No one loves the Golden Age of Hollywood more than I. Now that we have VHS tapes and DVD's. I can now enjoy my favorite movies of yester year once again. My collection includes a lot of Mickey and Judy's movies. My other favorite was musicals which they don't make any more like they use to do. Mickey made his mark there as well. If I may make a personal remark. I was born with cerebral palsy. I was physically limited with what I could do. The movies were where I could dream. It became my friend and my companion. Mickey may have been 5' 3", but he was a giant of a talent. Mickey your height was perfect to me for you see I am 5' 3" too. I loved Mickey then, and I love him now. I am so glad that he is still with us. You go Mickey. My physical condition has become more limited in recent years. I am grateful I have my movies to keep me company and raise my spirits. I am sorry that my children did not have the wholesome entertainment from today's entertainment industry. I will be forever grateful for the wisdom and wholesome influence of my grandmother for she gave me the greatest gift  that of quality of life, and introducing me to a friend named Mickey.

Mickey Rooney’s Faith

He became one of America’s most loved
Actors of all time
Like all actors he had his ups and downs
Unlike many actors of his time he
Has something else called faith
Over twenty years of serving God
Mickey hasn’t stopped yet
Many actors have died without the faith
Mickey has today
Mickey’s faith in his God, his Lord, his
Saviour has helped through the rough
Times of his life
His faith has allowed him to be a
Testimony to others around the world
A Light that has shown around the world
For more than two decades.

Jessie's Dedication To Mickey Rooney (fan club owner)

Dear Mickey,

I'm so glad God saw fit to let you be born.  You bring me a lot of fun and joy by watching your movies.  You also bring tears to my eyes when I see you cry.  You had so many talents...and you shared them with us.  You had many sorrows and trials in your life.  Life for you was not always a bed of roses.  You climbed to the top of the ladder, but you also have known what it's like to be at the bottom of that ladder.  No matter what happened you always put all of your best into your work.  You ALWAYS gave your best.

I appreciate you standing against Hollywood's depiction of religion and for your open profession of Jesus Christ.  It brings joy to my heart when I read that you give the Lord credit for the accomplishments of your life.  I'm glad you gave your life to Christ.

You will never be forgotten after you are gone.  I'll always remember you Andy, Huck, Tom . . . Mickey!  In my eyes you were what a true star is made of.  Talent, laughter, music, just everything rolled in to one 5 foot 3 inch package.  Hollywood will never know another talent like you.  You are a real trouper, an inspiration to me and many others.  You are the tops!

Your Devoted Fan,

Jessie

I saw my first Mickey Rooney when I was 10 years old.  When I came home from school, my mother was watching "A MIDSUMMERS NIGHTS DREAM" on the afternoon movie.  When I first saw Mickey as Puck...I was hooked!  I ask my mom to tell me whenever there was another movie on with Mickey in it.  She said that "starting next week, they are going to show one of his movies everyday for two weeks".  So I would come straight home from school.  Those 10 movies turned out to be the ANDY HARDY series starting with "A FAMILY AFFAIR" with Lionel Barrymore as Judge Hardy.  I was mesmerized!  Mickey seemed to just be himself, instead of acting. A real boy with all the problems and sceams that any kid has.  After that I would search for any movie with him in it.

When video tapes came out, and I was grown, I started collecting all his movies that I could get my hands on.  Also any book about him or by him.  About 15 years ago, my dream came true!  When he was in appearing in "Sugar Babies" in Detroit at the Fox Theater, after a attended the performance (which was great by the way), I staked out the stage door hoping to catch a glimpse of him.  All of a sudden, there he was!  He came down the steps and I worked my way up to him.  I called out..."Mickey you were great!  I have been a fan of yours for 40 years". He turned, looked at me, shook my hand and said "thanks...I appreaciate it". If I could have cut off my hand and framed it, I would have.  It is one of my greatest memories!  My friends and family laught when I tell them that, but they just don't understant how thrilled I was...and still am.  I would love to write him a letter and tell him what an impact he has had on me for all these years!  I even have 6 framed pictures of him hanging on the wall in my movie room.

Please add this dedication to your web site Jessie so all his fans can see how much he means to me!  And if there is any chance of writing to him, PLEASE let me know!!!
